Obama's Dog

The results of the election are in, but now America is waiting for the answer to the next pressing dilemma: What type of dog will the Obamas get?

Surely, this is something most families have to decide. A dog is just as much a part of the family as anyone else. It requires planning.

However, it is now a public affair, at first receiving more attention than the economic plan. When President-elect Barack Obama spoke at his first president since being elected, even he regarded the doggie decision as a "major issue."

Don't we have a bit more to concern ourselves with?

News outlets and citizens alike have been buzzing with talk of the presidential pup. If nothing else was heard from Obama's acceptance speech it was the word "puppy."

So what kind of dog will the elected first family get, the family that has been compared with the Kennedys, their image sought after by so many Americans? Whatever they choose, you betcha it will be mimicked from Alaska to New York. The difference is that the average family doesn't have to worry about picking the perfect puppy to accommodate for certain needs.

The Obamas have one major limitation; their oldest daughter Malia, 10, is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic (And I thought there were only hypoallergenic pillows). Along with that, other preferences include Malia's choice of a goldendoodle, a shelter or rescue dog, or as Obama simply stated, "a mutt like me".

Their decision isn't made yet. The family still has a while till its time for the move to their new home. So those who want Obama to have their dog, get on that ASAP. And don't forget about that offer of the Peruvian Hairless Dog, nicknamed "Ears". That's some real competition.

Now, if you're still with me, I hope you're thinking, "Why does this even matter?"

It really does not matter. America has been so consumed by the election for the past two years. Now its over and what do we do? Obsess over a dog. We give our opinions, vote on it, discuss it with friends or colleagues.

A fellow student at PLNU, Scott Monroe, a senior engineering and physics major, it outside of the Obama dog bubble, and glad about it.

"I've never even heard of it," said Monroe.

It's comforting to know that not everyone is involved in the most pressing presidential decision of the year. But Monroe said he can't believe that the nation cares so much.

"I personally don't care," said Monroe, "but he should rescue a dog. He's a family man, get a mutt. That sounds nice."

Monroe is engaged to be married this summer and plans of getting a dog of his own, too. His decision, though, won't be a public affair.

"It will be fun to see what they get, but whether or not it makes a difference on what I think about him... it won't."

(It actually is a bit cute, despite its lack of fur.)

I agree. It does not matter which dog he picks. We should be focusing on more important issues concerning his presidency. However, since it is already a hit topic, I hope he picks a shelter dog and encourages others to do so! If Obama is going for looks, he better pick the Goldendoodle! It's a lot cuter than the Peruvian hairless.

I definitely agree that it doesn't matter and it's crazy that as a country we're spending even a little time thinking about this topic. I like your point about it. What I like even more is the picture of the puppy.
